Lecture by: Alexander Marr, Professor of Renaissance and Early Modern Art, Cambridge University

Professor Marr will examine the subtle wit embedded in Holbein the Younger’s portraits of Thomas More and the More family. In his forthcoming book, Holbein’s Wit: Pictorial Ingenuity in Renaissance Art, Professor Marr analyzes these portraits and others in relation to ingenuity, wordplay (especially puns), and Holbein’s distinctive artistic genius.

Alexander Marr is Professor of Renaissance and Early Modern Art at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity Hall. He is Head of the Department of History of Art and Co-Chair of the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art. He specializes in European and British art and architecture from 1400 to 1800, especially their intellectual, literary, and scientific aspects.
