Lecture by Dr. James Hankins, Professor of History at Harvard, author of Virtue Politics: Soulcraft and Statecraft in Renaissance Italy.

More's Utopia is a brilliantly original work of political imagination whose inspiration is often traced to classical Greek philosophers. This lecture will argue that the Christian humanist tradition of virtue politics provides an equally illuminating context. It focuses in particular on the Utopia's relationship with the De institutione reipublicae (ca. 1471) of Francesco Patrizi of Siena, Bishop of Gaeta, the greatest humanist political thinker of the quattrocento.
