Lecture by Dr. Stephen Smith, Hillsdale College, Co-Director of the Center for Thomas More Studies.
Written over the 14 months of his imprisonment, More’s Tower letters provide remarkable insights into the mind and heart of a great humanist and statesman facing the trial of his life. What do the writings reveal about More’s mind and heart at this testing point? Is the vision informing these letters consistent with the young More’s thinking on subjects such as virtue, conscience, friendship, and leading citizenship? What was More hoping to communicate to family, friends, and posterity from the silence of his Tower cell?
