Pulled every which-way by competing desires, responsibilities, advertisements, Woyzeck tries to use the tools offered by experts and institutions but they only distract or numb him from the challenging world that unsettles him ever more. His job seems meaningless, his peers are similarly anxious and addled, and his education fails to give answers to his questions. Challenged, bewildered, and betrayed in his hope for stability and certainty, he tips further towards the brink of nihilism and hatred, hatred of self, of his peers, and ultimately abandonment of his own humanity.
Woyzeck, an ensemble adaptation of Büchner’s hallucinatory tragedy, which explores the challenges of rediscovering human nobility amidst our alienated and anxious contemporary world.
